:: Shabbat
"The heaven and the earth were finished, and all their array.  On the seventh day   G-d finished the work that He had been doing, and He ceased on the seventh day from all the work that He had done.  And G-d blessed the seventh day and declared it holy."

--Genesis 2:1-3

Guests and visitors are always warmly welcomed at all of our Shabbat services.

Friday Evenings

Shabbat services begin on Friday with Kabbalat Shabbat.  Twice per month, we offer a Carlebach Kabbalat Shabbat service using spirited melodies composed by Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. You can hear those melodies here.   While the service is all in Hebrew, we offer user-friendly "Friday Night Live" siddurim that display Hebrew, transliteration and translation in a unique colinear format.

On other Friday nights we offer a Kabbalat Shabbat service using the prayer book Sim Shalom, with traditional melodies.  You can listen to our traditional melodies here

The time for Shabbat services changes from week to week.  See the interactive calendar for Friday night service times.

Saturday Morning

During the year, Shabbat morning services are usually held in the Benheim Sanctuary.  P'sukei D'zimrah begins at 9:30 AM  and is frequently lay-led.  Cantor Freidrich leads Shacharit beginning at 9:50 AM with the Torah is removed from the ark at approximately 10:30 AM. The Torah and Haftarah are read by congregants. Time permitting, we conclude with a full Musaf led by the Rabbi, Cantor or a congregant.

Services conclude with Kiddush.  Members regularly sponsor a luncheon which is prepared by members of the Sisterhood.  Lunch is always concluded with ruach filled singing of z'mirot and the public recitation of Birkat Hamazon.

Saturday Afternoon

Shabbat concludes with Mincha (see calender for times). After Mincha, we assemble in the Winig Library for a light Seudah Shlishit consisting of "beer and Schmeer".  Rabbi Malik teaches a short class and leads a few songs before Birkat Hamazon.  Maariv and Havdallah follow.
