The Blessing of Parenting:  Raising Our Children with Jewish Spiritual Values

Join us for a 5-session parenting group, in which we will discover how the Torah and other Jewish teachings can provide us with guidance in raising our children. Each week, we will read and discuss selections from the book, The Blessing of a Skinned Knee by Wendy Mogel.  Please purchase a copy of the book before the first class.

Jewish History Mini-Series (part of our Monday Mega-Series):  Jewish Science in Pre-Modern Times

Andrew Berns, a Penn scholar who participated in our Jewish History Mini-Series in the past, is back by popular demand. In this mini-series, Berns will lecture on botany, mineralogy and zoology in medieval and early modern times.  His focus will be on doctors and rabbis who took an interest in the natural world of the Bible and strove to balance their faith in received traditions with their scientific pursuits.

Halacha L’Maaseh (Practical Halacha):  Shulchan Aruch & Mishnah Berurah Texts About Shabbat Observance

As we partake of “Beer and Shmear” (a.k.a. “Shalosh Seudot”, the third meal of Shabbat), we will read and discuss excerpts of the “Shulchan Aruch”, the 16th century Separdic code of Jewish law, along with the 16th century Ashkenazic gloss of Rabbi Moshe Isserles and the 19th century commentary of the Chafetz Chayim known as the “Mishnah Berurah”.  This year, we will study sections of these texts that deal with Shabbat observance.

Dates: Shabbat afternoons on March 14 and 28; April 11 and 18; May 16 and 23; June 13 and 20.

Wild Women of Biblical Proportions (a.k.a. Bodacious Babes in the Bible)

A monthly class for women taught by Rabbi Lisa Malik, beginning on Wednesday, April 29 at 10 AM. This class will meet on the last Wednesday of the month at Bala Cynwyd Library. The women we will study between April-July include: Tamar, Ruth & Naomi, Dena, Rachel & Leah.

Art of Jewish Living Mini-Series:  Kippah & Tallit-Making Workshops  (part of our Monday Mega-Series)

In these hands-on workshops, you will learn how to crochet a kippah and how to tie tzitzit knots on a tallit. You will also have an opportunity to design a tallit of your very own using pre-cut silk and fabric paints. This class is open to pre-teens, teenagers, and adults. It is appropriate for those who are artistically challenged as well as those who are not! There is a cost of $75 per person for materials. To sign up, call the synagogue office or send an e-mail to ruth@sjccba.org. RSVP required by no later than March 1, 2009.

Tikkun Leyl Shavuot:  All Night Study Session

We celebrate our ancestors’ receiving the Torah by studying Jewish texts and topics all night long on Erev Shavuot. Before midnight, there will be a few different study sessions running concurrently. After midnight, there will be approximately one session per hour. Topics will range from Torah to Talmud to Jewish Philosophy to cooking workshops.  There will be sessions for children as well as for adults, as well as supervision of those children who wish to participate in our annual Shabbat Sleepover. Coffee, cheesecake, and other dairy foods will be service throughout the night. For those who opt to stay all night, we will conclude our studies with an early morning Shacharit service, including the reading of the Ten Commandments.

Time: 7:30 PM on Thursday evening until 4:30 AM on Friday morning
