Walking with God (part of our Monday Mega-Series)

In this course, we will explore the variety of ways in which God is portrayed and understood in Jewish tradition.  In addition to studying biblical and rabbinic texts, we will also delve into medieval, modern, and contemporary Jewish writings that deal with different conceptualizations of God.  Through text-study and discussions, we will analyze different images of God in Tanach, Talmud, Midrash, Halacha, Jewish Philosophy, Kabbalah, Chassidut, and Modern Jewish Thought. In our final class sessions, we will synthesize our learning by trying to determine our own personal theologies and/or relationships with God.  Each class will feature journal-writing and a “chevruta” component, in which small groups of students will grapple with selected texts before we engage in whole-class discussions.  This course is based on a curriculum developed by Deborah Silber and Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson, the Dean of the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at the American Jewish University.
